3 Il nome Brut, che compare in questi e altri poemi, deriva dal racconto favoloso, su cui ha molto elaborato Goffredo di Monmouth, secondo cui un certo Bruto, nipote (o pronipote) di Enea, fu il primo uomo a metter piede sulla vagheggiata isola di Albion (abitata fino ad allora soltanto da “certi giganti”), ribattezzandola Britannia dal proprio nome e chiamando i suoi compagni Britanni.
